Storyboard Text

  • Today we are going to practice self-assessment of a piece of writing. Let's do a quick write: choose a classmate, and write a descriptive paragraph about their outfit today.
  • My paragraph includes: 1. An interesting introductory sentence. 2. At least 3 describing sentences. 3. Uses adjectives for each noun. 4. A conclusion sentence. 5. Upper case letters where they belong (beginning of sentence, names). 6. Proper punctuation.
  • First - let's decide on the success criteria for our assignment. What does a descriptive paragraph need to include?
  • *Teacher copies some checklist/goals sheets, then writes own paragraph while students write
  • Please take 10  minutes to write your paragraph.
  • Now that we have written our paragraphs, we are going to practice an important skill call self-assessment. It is important to be able to decide what we did well on, and what we can improve on in each piece of work we do!
  • Teacher paragraph is displayed for all to see.
  • "I used more than one adjective for each noun to help the reader create a picture in their mind ... that it something to go in the "Done very well" section!" "Hm, I have an introductory sentence, but it isn't very interesting ... I want the reader to be excited to read my paragraph. I am going to add that to my "Improvement Ideas" section."
  • Teacher models how to assess own work with checklist and give descriptive feedback using some of below comments.
  • Teacher paragraph is displayed for all to see.
  • Checklist & Goals sheet displayed
  • Your turn. Use the checklist to decide how you have done on your paragraph. Identify one thing you have done really well on, and one thing you can improve on. Write yourself a goal for your next descriptive paragraph. Then we will discuss.
  • Now that I know what I need to improve in this piece of writing, I can make some corrections. It is also important to set goals for my learning. For my next descriptive paragraph, my goal is to make the reader wants to read my paragraph by creating an interesting introductory sentence. I am already doing a great job of using adjectives, so I will keep that up.
