Many people look back at the recreation after the Civil War and think "Were freeman really free?" I am here to explain what I think about this topic.
Slaves work hard and all day, almost every slave works in the cotton fields.
Then there was a war because the South wanted to leave the state and continue slavery. Although on the other hand the North wanted to end slavery and didn't want the South to leave the state.
After the war ended the North won, slavery ended , and there were benefits for black people. For example a agency called the Freeman's Bureau. This was an agency that re-united African american families.
Then there was bad things that came from the war. For example Poll taxes. These were taxes that had to be paid to be registered to vote. Also there is Literacy Tests. This is a test to see if you have had an education or not. If you didn't you would not be able to vote either.
This leads to my conclusion. The question was "Were Freeman really free?". My answer to this is no there were many things that limited African Americans to not be free.
