Storyboard Text

  • The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County by Mark Twain
  • Mark Twain goes to meet Simon Wheeler to learn more about Rev. Leonidas W. Smiley, but learns about a man named Jim Smiley who has a gambling problem.
  • One day, Jim Smiley caught a frog and was determined to teach the frog to be the highest-jumping frog in Calaveras County.
  • Jim Smiley goes downtown and meets a man. He bets him that his frog can outjump any other frog. The man agrees for $40 and Jim Smiley goes out to fetch him a frog.
  • While Jim was out, his opponent put quail pellets in Jim's frog's mouth to make him lose the bet.
  • When Jim's frog didn't move, he was shocked. The man took off with the money before Jim realized what had happened.
  • Mark Twain decided he had heard enough of Simon Wheeler's story since it wasn't useful to him and left.
