Roger thought that he would take the purse and escape. The irony is situational irony. What was to expected to happen was he would escape with the purse. What actually happened was he fell on his back and Mrs. Jones caught him.This helps the reader understand that Roger get caught by Mrs, Jones.
Mrs.Jones picks up Roger instead of running away with her purse. This irony is situational irony. What was expected to happen was would've just got her purse back and hurry home. What actually happened was Mrs. Jones picks up Roger and actually shakes him. This helps the reader understand that Mrs. Jones wasn't going to let him get away after what he had did.
Mrs. Jones did watch her purse when it was with Roger after he tried to steal it. The irony is situational irony. What was expected to happen was she would keep her purse close. What actually happened was that she left Roger alone with her purse. This helps the reader understand that she had a little bit of trust in the boy and she wanted to test him.
