Why can you choose popes and I can't choose kings?
I hereby banish you from the Church
King Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII argued over who should be able to appoint popes and who should be able to appoint kings.
Pope Gregory was enraged and decided to completely excommunicate King Henry from dealing with any church affairs and banishing him directly to hell. Henry immediately regretted his decision.
So the King decided to go with his wife and kids to the Pope and beg for forgiveness. Each day the Pope said no until the third when he was freezing cold and on his knees begging for forgiveness.
