The younger family are about to receive an insurance check for 10,000 dollars. Walter wants to use the check for a liquor store meanwhile the family disagrees.

Mama does not want to give Walter the check for the liquor store and instead wants to buy a house. Walter breaks down and becomes depressed because of his dream being crushed.

Walter comes home very drunk after being very depressed and turns “crazy.” Mean while Beneatha is doing a traditional Nigerian dance and Walter decides to join her.
You can have the extra 3000 dollars from the check
Mama sympathizes with Walter after using part of the money from the check for a new home. She gives Walter 6500 dollars, 3500 for Beneatha’s schooling and 3000 Walter can keep.

Walter finds out from one of his friends that the money he used to invest in the liquor store was stolen before it arrived in the bank. He also used up Beneatha’s schooling money which angers the whole family.
