Madame Loisel and her husband live in France in the 19th century who are middle class. He is a clerk and Madame Loisel does not do anything.
Madame Loisel is not satisfied with what she has in her life. She does not want to be middle class. She wants to have a social life and have all the great things a high class family has.
Madame Loisel gets a dress and goes to the hall and she is the prettiest one there. Everyone there looks at her and comes up to start a conversation with her. Madame Loisel guilt's her husband in giving her 400 franks for a dress because she thinks she will look like a pauper. Then she is angry that she has no jewelry so she borrows a necklace from a friend.
When Madame Loisel and her husband get to their house she realizes that she has lost her friends diamond black necklace. Madame Loisel's husband goes to find it until almost 7 in the morning.
The couple buys a new necklace for 34,000 franks, and replaces it and gives it to her friend and never says she lost it. Her husband got 2 jobs so they could pay it off, which took 10 years. They had to give away a lot of there things. They had to move into someones attic.
Madame Loisel runs into her friend at the park and she tells her the story of when she lost her necklace. Her friend told her that the necklace was paste and only 400 franks.
