This is the Smith family. Ashley and David have been married for several years now. They have 2 sons, Dylan and Shaun. They are ages 12 & 9. David worked as a doctor at Durham Regional and Ashley works part time at as a receptionist at a hotel so she can focus more on taking care of her children.
One day while Ashley was home making dinner she received a devastating phone call. She was informed that her husband had passed away at the scene of a horrific car crash. Ashley and the children were distraught.
Ashley was afraid that she would lose everything. David brought in over half of their monthly income. She didn't know how she was going to financially support herself as well as take care of her children while working a part time job that paid a little over minimum wage.
Luckily, Ashley's sister Amanda also worked at a hospital. She was able to help pay Ashley out by offering to help her pay her rent and bills. Ashley was very grateful for her sister and promised to pay her back when she recovered from this tragedy.
Later that week Ashley went down to her local Department of Social Services and applied for Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF). A few days later she returned to the Department of Social Services and was able to sit and discuss finding a new job and getting back on her feet with one of the workers.
TANF helped Ashley go back to school and earn her Associate's Degree. She found a full time job at Duke as a surgical technologist. She also downsized on her home to save more money on rent. She was able to repay her sister and live comfortably with her children.
