Dr. Levac: Alright everyone take some time to brainstorm ideas that you would like to focus on for your personal value proposition
What issue am I going to focus?
I went Downton Toronto one day only to notice an abundance people sleeping on the streets, which then led me to wonder why this was happening. It also led me to ask the question, are adults the only victims of homelessness in the city? Are there kids that are also affected by this issue?
I then proceeded to do research on the topic and it became apparent to me that youth homelessness is a major issue in Canada, with most of the individuals that are affected being between the ages of 11 and 21 and make up 25% of the homeless population in Canada. The major reasons for it were due to family issues, alienation, poverty and abuse.
I've decide that taking SOC*2390, UNIV*3000, POLS*3320, PHIL*2120 and POLS*2250 will give me the useful background knowledge on the topic of youth homelessness, as well information from other courses and practical skills due to real world experience that will allow me to be the most informed version of myself and being able to make the most useful and positive impact possible.
With my topic decided, I have decided that in order to help with this issue I will choose to have my engagement opportunity with Streets to Jobs, helping homeless youth get back in the work force to gain more independence, as well as working at the Covenant House by helping operate the facility as it is a place to provides refuge, health services, mental health services, schooling services as well as providing an education program to the public to raise awareness about this issue.
LIFE AND WORKFORCE SKILLS 101
These methods as well as doing additional readings on the policies and government actions surrounding youth homelessness through sources such as the Federal Investment in Youth Homelessness publication will be me more insight on the root causes of the issue as well as what is being done to stop and further prevent the issue will be a useful tool in assisting to solve this problem. Although all these methods are not a definite method for solving this issue, they will as contribute significantly by pointing society in the direction of making change.
