After discussing the matter, and through much contemplating, Madelyn's mother allowed Madelyn not to have her surgery.
Mother, I don't want to have this surgery.
Madelyn was thrilled; she wasn't going to have the surgery every 16 year old girl had. She got to be herself. Madelyn wondered if there were other girls like her, girls who didn't want the surgery, but didn't want to go against the system.
Madelyn bravely gave a speech in front of a bunch of girls her age. She spoke confidently about loving yourself for who you are, not what some surgery changes. The other girls reacted positively. Madelyn changed the social norm just by being herself.
