  • fiend-(noun) an evil supernatural being.
  • glorious-(adj) having or deserving high honor
  • laments-(noun) a cry of sorrow and grief
  • in the text"fiend" is used to show the antagonist and compare him to the devil "So Hrothgar's men lived happy in his hall till the monster stirred, that demon, that fiend, Grendel"  (15-17)
  • in the text "glorious" is used to represent that Grendel did not ever go to the Herot to hurt Hrothgar because he was protected by god.  "in Herot, when the night hid him, he never dared to touch king Hrothgar's glorious throne, protected by god" (82-84)
  • in the text "laments" is shown after Grendel has attacked Herot and killed Hrogthar's soldiers. The men go from having a god day to cry and show grief. "how well he had worked, and in that gray morning broke their long feast with tears and laments  for the dead" (42-44)
