Burt was very similar to any other teenager. He enjoyed learning and was successful in school, he had friends he loved hanging out with, and he seemed to have some special gene that made him an excellent photographer.
He had a happy and supportive family who loved and cared for him.
Even though Burt knew he had all of these wonderful aspects of his life, recently he couldn't help but feel not quite sad, but empty at the end of the day.
His feelings began to affect his behavior. It started with his home life as he slowly stopped eating dinner with his family and spent most of his time sleeping or alone in his room. Then he stopped responding to his friend's invites to go out. He went weeks without touching his camera.
One day Burt's parents received a call from his school letting them know he was in danger of failing his classes. His parents knew this wasn't their normal Burt and that it was time to step in. They sat with Burt and even though the conversation was difficult, they all decided he needed some help to get control of his life back.
Burt's family went with him to see a psychiatrist who told him he was suffering from depression. She told him that he wasn't alone and over 16 million others are going through the same things. Over time, with the help of his family, friends, and medical professionals, Burt was feeling and acting like his normal self again. He learned the importance of accepting help from those who love him and that his depression is not something that will weigh him down forever.
