I'm just ready to finally have freedom. I can't wait!
Hang in there, just 20 more miles!
Thank you for our freedom! We owe you our lives!
You're very welcome, it's what I do ;)
With the slave life getting worse and worse, Harriet Tubman wanted to help the enslaved and lead them to freedom through a long, hidden trail called the underground railroad, where she had secretly led thousands of slaves to freedom in the North.
Along the underground railroad, Harriet was only able to bring small groups at a time. The trip was long and grueling, but the chance at a better life drove the escaped slaves to keep going.
Harriet Tubman led the escaped slaves past the southern border and into the North, but would mostly bring them into Canada, where slavery was illegal. In Canada, the newly freed people couldn't be brought back to the South because of the Fugitive Slave Act put into place.
