  • The Westward Expansion began because different territories wanted to become states. The slavery expansion in the westward expansion in the western states caused a great deal of controversy. The North and South grew further apart. The fears that were realized when the expansion of slavery in the western territories caused congressional debates.
  • Slavery was very popular in the South. Slavery was decided using popular sovereignty. The Texas and New Mexico territories had a tough Fugitive Slave Act.
  • The South becam happy because they got a no slavery restriction in the Texas and New Mexico territories, slave holding was premitted in Washington D.C., Texas got $10 million, and the Fugitive Slave Law. The North was happy with what they had to, but they still wanted slavery to end. California got ammited as a free state, slave trade was prohibted in Washington D.C., and Texas lost boundary dispute with New Mexico.

  • The North refused to enforce the Fugitive Slave Law. Massachusetts called for nullifications. The North began to claim that the law was unfair, so Abraham Lincoln stepped in and said there could not be half free and half slave states. He decided that every one should be treated equally.
