  • Surrounding our yard lie ten thousand acres of Daddy's cotton fields, that plants green and strong, tall as my waist.  A few colored men sit under a distant shed, staring into the heat. (p. 64)
  • The call of adventure
  • I'd like to write this showing the point of view of the help. The colored women down here.(p. 123)
  • Refusal of the call
  • Often she demanded to know if I was happy and the details of this. Our letters were like a yearlong conversation, answering questions back and forth, continuing face-to-face at Christmas or between summer school sessions.(p. 79)
  • Skeeter came back home from school. she has her bags and is ready to live with her parents. Her parents were happy she was home but they thought she needed a boyfriend.
  • Meeting with the mentor/helper
  • The room is full of cake-eating, tab-drinking, cigarette-smoking women all about my age. Some are whispering to each other, glancing my way. (p. 205)
  • Skeeter has the idea of writing a book on the black maids. she always tells her mom when she goes for interview that she is going for a bible study. she says the book she is writing is about the bible.
  • Crossing the threshold
  • Miss Skeeter, I'm on help you with the stories. (p. 297)

  • Tests and enemies
  • Skeeter, I told you, I hate talking.... Dad only knows part of it. Mother knows the real story, so do Patricia's parents. And of course Her. She knows what she did, that's for goddam sure. (p. 287)
  • Miss Skeeter is getting mad at the other women at the Lady's Club because they all talk about the colored people and Miss Skeeter can't stand this disrespect. She watches them closer to take note of their attitudes.
  • Miss Skeeter interviews many colored women and starts to gain their trust. Once she gets rolling, more agree to talk to her and she is happy that she has all of this information to start writing her book.
  • Stuart is loosing patience with Skeeter while they are dating, and he kind of just stops seeing her when she asks lots of questions about his old girlfriend. Now Skeeter has to go back to her mom and tell her the relationship is over.
