Storyboard Description

The subject of the "failure" from ten years ago comes up, and Jonas asks what happened. The Giver explains that, when the last Receiver of Memory failed, the memories didn't come back to him. Instead they were released to the world---everyone had access to them, the way it used to be. This made it clear to everyone just how much they needed a Receiver---so that someone could suffer on behalf of everyone else. He goes on to explain that his life, his job, is simply to hold the memories.

Storyboard Text

  • What happened to the last Receiver of Memory?
  • When the last Receiver failed, the memories didn't come back to me. They went...
  • I don't know exactly where. They went someplace out there. And then the people had access to them.
  • But you have to suffer like that all the time! And that's what will happen to me when I become the official Receiver!
  • They really suffered. It was chaos; That's why they need a Receiver to contain all the pain. And knowledge.
  • Along with walking and eating and reading. That's it?
  • In this room?
  • Those are simply the things that I do. My life is here.
  • No. In my being. Where the memories are.
