Storyboard Text

  • The white race was trying to make the blacks think they were receiving a reward, but was deceived and then dehumanized being electrocuted and given a false sense of hope.
  • "I trembled with excitement, forgetting my pain..shaking me like a wet rat" (26-27).
  • The briefcase holds a huge symbol due to the narrator holding on to the words of the white man who gave him the present of being important and educated (the scholarship).
  • "My fingers a- tremble, I complied, smelling the fresh leather.. I ran awkwardly off the floor" (32).
  • Narrator feels the obligation to obey Bates because he holds a higher power over him even though the letters are important to him.
  • "I removed the letter from my briefcase.. and I obeyed" (167).
  • The narrator had confidence in getting a job that he was guaranteed, but at the end, it became a false sense of hope and he was deceived.
  • "I had already written home.. I had been lying about the job" (169).
  • The whites are making it seem as if they're sharing the same equality as the blacks, making it look like they have a chance of chasing up to them. But the reality is, they're setting the blacks up with a sense of false hope, because at the end- the whites continued have the upper hand.
  • "He hadn't been chasing me at all.. he gave an impression that he understood much and spoke out of knowledge far deeper than appeared on the surface of his words" (294).

  • One can wish for equality, but the one who has the equality isnt a fool to give up his power so easily to the ones who he's been using his power against.
