  • Emperor gives monks shoen as gifts. This meant that the monks could tax the people who worked for them and did not need to give money back to the emperor. He lost his money and his power and japan was being governed by the wealthy families instead of the emperor

  • The Taira and Minamoto clans fought Taira Kiyoromi killed Yoshitomo
  • 1274
  • Miamoto's sons, Yoritomo and Yoshitune overthrow Taira. Yoritomo allows the emperor to keep title, but removes power by appointing "Shugo" and "Jito" to maintain order

  • Mongols tried to attack the Japanese but was stopped by big wind that washed them all away from Japan. The Japanese thought that it was a divine wind sent by heaven to protect Japan. They called it "Kamikaze"
  • The Mongol invasion left the Kamakura bakafu needing to improve their defences. They had to raise the tax, this left the Japanese quite angry at the Kamakura bakafu. Ashikaga Takauji overthrew the Kamakura bakafu and built his own bakafu. (Kamakura bakafu ended, Ashikaga bakafu began)
