  • 1824- John Adams & the Corrupt Bargain

  • 1830- Worcester v. Georgia
  • John Quincy Adams ran against Andrew Jackson in the election of 1824. Jackson got the most electoral votes however Congress chose Adams. Jackson had a poor background and was violent. To win, Adams used what Jackson called the corrupt bargain. Adams bribed the Congress so he could win. The result, John Adams won the election of 1824.
  • 1836- Trail of Tears
  • The South Carolina Nullification announced that South Carolina would soon secede & that they were going to ignore the Tariff of Abominations. The Tariff of Abominations was a high tariff on imported goods that lowered taxes on manufactured goods. To stop South Carolina from seceding, Henry Clay made a compromise to reduce taxes for 10 years. Congress later passed the tariff of 1833. South Carolina accepted the tariff & decided not to secede.
  • In Georgia, it is prohibited to have a non-Native Americans on Native American lands. Worcester had been living with the Natives for a while. The Supreme court ruled that Worcester be freed. Jackson forced the Natives out of their home.
  • Jackson moved the eastern tribes west of the Mississippi River because he wanted the land & resources. They had a treaty that said no one could force them out of their homes but Jackson ignored that treaty & made them move anyways. Along the way, 4,000/ 16,000 died of starvation, exposure, & fever.
