Tom Robinson, an African American is accused of raping Mayella Ewell the daughter of Bob Ewell. Atticus Finch a very important character in the novel is chosen to defend Tom and prove him innocent. It affects the white community because the racism in each of the townspeople begins to show.

What happens last is that Ewell goes for Scout and Jem, instead of Atticus. Boo Radley goes and looks for Bob and when he finds him all he want to do is kill him and he accomplish his threat.
