Storyboard Text

  • "Men to the left! Women to the right!" on page 29
  • Eliezer
  • Eliezer and his family live in a small town called Sighet, Hungarian Transylvania. Eliezer has a desire to learn about the Jewish religion, so he seeks out Moshe the Beadle who works at a synagogue.
  • During WWII, the Nazis took over Sighet and sent the Jews to concentration camps. The Nazis separate Eliezer and his father from his mother and sister.
  • When Eliezer’s father lay dying, he calls out "Eliezer!" However, Elie doesn't respond. His father is then killed and Eliezer is filled with guilt and despair.  Elie is losing hope and wonders about his religion.
  • On April 11, 1945, the concentration camp in  Buchenwald was liberated by an American tank.
  • Were saved!
  • The first thing that Eliezer and the other prisoners did was to jump on to the provisions.
  • After Eliezer was liberated, he was taken to the hospital to recover. At one point on his way to the restroom, he stares into a mirror.  It had been years since he had seen himself and he doesn't recognize himself.  “From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating me. The look in his eyes as he gazed at me has never left me” (Wiesel 115).
