  • Arthur Miller wrote the crucible because he had a story to tell. The Crucible was set in Puritan community of Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692.
  • Motivation
  • Reverend Hale is characterized as a young doctor and intelligent. "Well you do come prepared!" (pg.153)
  • Power
  • He was worried about his reputation after accusing and beating Tituba for witchcraft and then finding out she didn't do it.
  • Hysteria
  • Hale is motivated to stand up for Proctor in the court room and set all the people he accused free.
  • He is innocent!!
  • Thank you Hale.
  • Hale wanted social power over the people he signed the death warrants on.
  • I have signed seventy-two death warrants. I am a minister of the Lord.
  • The hysteria caused Hale to be angry because all of the girls were accusing others of witchcraft all at the same time.
