Hades, the god of the underworld, didn't go to the surface of the Earth much. Although on one of the days that he did, he spotted a beautiful young lady named, Persephone. He took a special liking to her. Although her mother, Demeter, was very protective of her and tried to shield her from all men.
Eventually, Hades went to go ask his brother, Zeus, for Persephone's hand in marriage, as he was her father. Zeus was happy to hear about his interest in his daughter and gave him his consent. Unfortunately he did it behind Demeter's back because she would never allow their marriage.
Where is she??
Since, Hades had not received Demeter's consent, he would have to stealthily sneak Persephone away from her. During the quick moment that Demeter had taken her eyes off of her daughter, Hades swept her away. Up until this point in time, Persephone and Hades had never spoken a word to one another.
When they arrived, Hades and Persephone got married, making her the Queen of the underworld. Hades was warm and welcoming to her, but Persephone was distant because she was taken away from her mother. Although she did partly enjoy it because she was treated respectfully as an adult, whereas her mother treated her like a child.
Demeter was furious once she found out her daughter had been taken away from her. Since Demeter was the goddess of the harvest she claimed that there would be no more production of crops until her daughter was returned. She froze the Earth including the soil and the crops.
Since Persephone's arrival to the underworld she refrained from eating any of their food. Until one day, the gardener offered her a pomegranate, considering she had not eaten in days, she accepted the fruit. She consumed six of its seeds.
