Later that day, Hermes, messenger of the gods, came to the underworld with a message for Persephone. He informed her of her mother's doings and that now people were dying due to starvation. Reluctantly she allowed Hermes to take her to Olympus, where her mother and father currently were.
Demeter was relieved to see her daughter and the Earth had returned to normal. Unfortunately Persephone could not come back to live with her. Earlier that day Persephone ate six pomegranate seeds, so she was bound to the underworld. Although Zeus declared that six months out of the year, for the six seeds that she ate, she would rule the underworld alongside Hades. The rest of the time she could spend with her mother, Demeter, on Earth.
