Storyboard Text

  • Exposition
  • Conflict
  • Rising Action
  • Elie Wiesel, 15, lived in Sighet, Transylvania with his father, mother, and three sisters. As a young boy, Elie was a devoted learner and believer of the Jewish faith. He grew close with a man named Moishe the beadle who taught him the Kabbalah.
  • Climax
  • In spring 1944, Nazi soldiers arrived in Sighet and forced all of the Jews to live in Ghettos. One day, Elie, his family, and the others were transported in cattle cars to Auschwitz. Elie and his father were separated from the rest of their family and sent to the barracks.
  • Falling Action
  • For a year, Elie witnessed horrific deaths and atrocities while working in an electrical factory. He and his father survive the "Selections" but experience harsh beatings with little to no food or comfort. One day, Elie sees the brutal hanging of a young boy and later says, "The soup tasted of corpses".
  • Resolution
  • As the war comes to an end, the camp is evacuated and Elie and his father begin a brutal death march to Gleiwitz. The inmates are forced to run in the freezing winter or be shot. Elie and his father stick together and help each other survive.
  • Only 12 prisoners survived the trip to Buchenwald. Sadly, Elie's father dies of illness leaving him distraught and emotionally exhausted. Throughout his struggle, Elie had come to believe that God had abandoned him, and blamed him for what happened.
  • On April 11, the resistance had taken control of Buchenwald and Elie was freed. Elie got very sick, but would survive to become a advocate for human rights. Elie stared at himself in the mirror, and saw a "corpse" looking back at him.
