Rainsford accidentally fell off of his crew's boat when cruising around the deck in the pitch black night. As he watched the lights from the boat fade away, his only choice was to swim to the shores of Shiptrap Island.
Rainsford made it to the shore after battling with the sea, and fell into a deep sleep after his battle with the sea. At this point, he did not care about what dangers the jungle held before him.
“Where there are pistol shots, there are men. Where there are men, there is food.”
The next day, Rainsford ventured into the jungle. He came across a palatial chateau, but was confronted by a huge man named Ivan who couldn't speak. The giant was put to ease by a man in fancy dress who went by General Zaroff.
General Zaroff explains his new hunting game to Rainsford. Sanger is immediately disgusted and calls Zaroff out for cold blooded murder.
"Did not make me condone cold blooded murder!"
"Surely your experiences in the war—”
After refusing to play General Zaroff's game with him, the once hospitbale host turned bitter and forced the skilled hunter to be a piece in his "game." Rainsford was scared, more than he ever had been. "Then it was that Rainsofrd knew the full meaning of terror." (p. 54).
"Nerve, nerve, nerve..."
"I shall be back."
Knowing that all he had to do was survive three nights in the jungle from General Zaroff, Rainsford decided to fight back the best he could. First, he tried a Malay Mantrap to get the General, but the Cossack was too smart for that.
