Running away to Thebes, Oedipus is stopped by a man refusing to let him pass. Angered with the refusal, Oedipus fights and kills the man. Then continues on to Thebes.
Stopped again, Oedipus is interrupted by the Sphinx and is given a riddle. Oedipus successfully answers the riddle and angers the Sphinx so much she kills herself.
The city of Thebes was grateful for the death of the Sphinx and have remorse over the death of King Laius. They then showed their gratitude to Oedipus and is made the King of Thebes and married to Queen Jocasta. Years later they have 4 children, two daughters Antigone and Ismene and two sons Polynices and Etocles.
