  • The Battle of Spotsylvania
  • The Union and confederate generals were Union - Abraham Lincoln and Confederacy -  Robert E. Lee
  • To capture the Spotsylvania Court House
  • The date of this battle were, May 8, 1864 through May 21, 1864. Confederate Casualties were much less than the union ones totaling to 12,000. On the other hand, the confederate casualties total to a whopping 18,000!
  • A Quick Summary
  • Robert himself hated the idea of not having other people ( slaves ) do his work for him, so he decided to be a leader of a war involving that "issue".  On the other hand, Aberaham was a very well educated smart man and thought that people should just not have a war in the first place. He dosn't have an opinion on slaves or no slaves, he just wants to save the union.
  • This whole battle pretty much took place in Northern Virginia
  •  Following the Battle of Wilderness, Lieut. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant marched the union army south in hope of capturing the Court House of Spotsylvania and preventing Robert E. Lee's army from reatreting further.
  • The Winner
  • When the union 5th under Maj. Gen. John engaged Con. Gen. Richard Anderson's first Corps at Laurel Hill and extend their lines further east into into a salient known as the Mule Shoe. All in all this was the third most costly battle of the WHOLE CIVIL WAR!! With multiple sneaky moves by the confederacy, the union barley pulled out of the battle.
  • While the main battle was about and at and for the Spotsylvania Courthouse, The battle wasn't exactly at the courthouse every second of the battle.
  • Although both sides fought very long and hard, there was no declared clear winner of the battle.
