Hi, my name is Wally and yes I am a water molecule. I've discovered recently that me as well as all my other water molecule friends can be turned into fresh clean drinking water. So I thought I'd bring you with me to check out this process.
The first step in the process is heading through the intake pipe. This will then lead me to the screening process. Which takes all the excess debris and dirt and separates it from me a water molecule.
Now chlorine is being added to the water, this stage is most commonly known as pre-chlorination. It helps to kill all the micro-organisms that may have been coming along for the journey with me. Then these chemicals mix together to form larger particles called flocs.
After the chlorine has been added I move onto the next stage, which brings me to the settling basin. The heavy flocs of particles that I mentioned before, now sink to the bottom of the basin. While the cleaner water such as me will go through spillways.
Next I begin the filtration process, here we are presented with carbon, sand, and gravel, which all play a role in making me clean. The sand removes extra bits of floc, and algae. Here other chemical impurities are also removed before I can move along. The carbon removes the icky smell and taste from me and my water friends.
After I've been sent through the filter, I will be placed in a storage container where three things will be added. Chlorine again to kill any remaining micro-organisms, I want to be as clean as possible. Fluoride to help prevent cavities. And lastly, excess chlorine is removed with sulphur dioxide.
