  • Symbol
  • Imagery
  • Figurative Language
  • The stones symbolize death. In the story, lines 15-21 explain the children piling stones of different sizes and shapes. By the end of the story, line 314-329 say how they throw the stones at Tessie. Tessie being stoned symbolized death.
  • Tone and Theme
  • Line 25-26 states, "The black box grew shabbier each year; by now it was no longer completely black but splintered badly along one side to show the original wood color, and in some places faded or stained." This gives us a clear image of the black box. It shows the color, and how old it grew. The sentence also explained how long they had it for.
  • The sentence I chose for figurative language is line 262, page 32.  The line states, "Where the breeze caught them and and lifted them. This shows personification because wind can't catch or lift anything. Wind is acting as a person in this sentence which isn't realistic.
  • The tone I chose for this story is suspense. My theme is "you chose your own faint." In the story, the people pick a paper and see either if they have a dot or not. It's suspenseful because the character has to see whether if they will die or not. No one knows whether they will get a dot.
