  • Dorothea Dix brought attention to the patients of the public asylums and helped establish several hospitals for the mentally ill
  • Due to the reform started by Dorothea Dix, there began an emphasis on rehabilitation and not punishment.

  • Alcohol had begun to cause many problems which popped up in work, making some ineffective workers
  • Drinking also caused many problems at the home and many husbands beat their wives and children.
  • A movement began to stop the act of drinking, but was ultimately ineffective later on, even after prohibition in the 1920s.
