  • King Louis XVI called together an Estates General where estates give grievances

  • However the King did not agree with Robespierre and the Third Estate
  • The Third Estate shall continue to pay the taxes
  • I also Disagree, and i am an absolute monarch with divine right so what i say goes!
  • KIng Louis XVI has locked the 3rd Estate out!
  • WE'RE LOCKED OUT!!!
  • OPEN UP
  • We will not stop until we have a  new constitution 
  • Theres a convenient tennis court over there!
  • WE WILL BE CALLED THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY FOR WE REPRESENT THE PEOPLE
  • Members of the Bourgeoise called themselves the National Assembly because they represented the majority of the nation
  • The 1st 2nd and 3rd Estates met and gave grievances to the King. The 3rd Estate voted for fair taxation but the was outvoted 2-1.  The Kings decision to keep taxing them enraged them further.
  • The General Assembly wrote down their constitution
  • Rights of Man. Life Liberty and Fraternity
  • Meanwhile in Paris...
  • One day the Bourgeoise, the Third Estate, found themselves locked out of the Palace 
  • Le Bastille
  • Robespierre and the rest of the Third Estate called themselves the National Assembly
  • Robespierre and the population France watched with glee as King Louis XVI was put to death in a public square
  • They wrote down their constitution, based on Enlightenment and Scientific Revolution ideas that told them everyone had rights to life liberty and fraternity. They wanted to turn France into a republic.
  • Needless to say the king did not sign it
  •    Parisians took the Bastille military prison looking for weapons. Although they found none it was a symbolic action that is still celebrated to this day.

  • On January 21 1793 King Louis was executed by Guillotine. Women marched to Versailles and captured the royal family.  The people of France challenged the status quo because by killing Louis XVI they rejected the idea of an absolute monarch.
