The narrator imagines judges and fears them. They were the ones who sent him to his cell. They appear “whiter than the sheet upon which i trace these words”. To the narrator, these figures were horror. The cause of all his fear was the judges.
He falls close to the hole; he drops and he lands with his head looking directly down the pit. Then he drops a rock to hear the depth of the pit as the rock bounces on the way down. This pit will be significant later in the story.
Afraid of what lies ahead, he groped back onto the wall so he can feel his way. It states, " My outstretched hands at length encountered some solid obstruction. It was a wall, seemingly of stone masonry -- very smooth, slimy, and cold... stepping with all the careful fistrust." ( Poe 253)
He had passed out , and woke up to a group of rats biting, his rope, and letting him loose. " "I so far elevated my head as to obtain a distinct view of my breast..i lay, had been literally swarming with rats..." (Poe 260)
After the breaking free, he had come upon the pendulum. " But the stroke of the pendulum already pressed upon my bosom...twice again it swung, and a sharp sense of pain shot through every nerve. Bu the moment of escape had arrived" (Poe 260)
"There was a discordant hum of human voices! ... The French army had entered Toledo. The inquisition was in the hands of its enemies." (Poe 262). The French army came and rescued teh narrator.
