Hello everyone. My name is Kiera and I will be your occupational therapist. Thank you for attending my group today focused on self-management. Self-management occupations can include role management, medication management, and emotional management. Based on the information I gathered, we will be focusing on emotional management since many of you want to work on coping with your emotions. Before we begin, can everyone introduce themselves to the group and tell us one fun fact about you.
Hi, um. My name is Timothy, but you can call me Tim. I guess my fun fact would be that I was an extra for the movie Godfather.
My name is Mindy. I have three lovely children and seven wild grandchildren.
It’s okay Mindy. Ruby, can you share your name and a fun fact about yourself with the group.
My name ... my name is Ruby. I used to live in Norway and came over to America when I was 21 years old.
RUBY, WAKE UP! It’s your turn to share!
Thank you all for sharing. How is everyone doing today? There seems to be some tension in the air.
Thank you for sharing Tim. I can teach you some ways to help you cope with the emotions that you may be feeling about your progression.
I’m okay, but I’ve been better. I don’t know what I’m going to do with the rest of my life and don’t know what will happen to me. I ultimately fear how my Diabetes will progress.
Thank you for sharing Mindy. I am sorry that this happened to you. I can help you find alternative ways to channel your frustration in times like these and ways to engage in healthier behaviors.
I’m annoyed. I just found out that the doctor is going to try a new treatment for my hypertension since the other didn't help. This is the third time they have changed my treatment! I didn't know about this change until my nurse came in to give me my medication. Do they know how this makes me feel!?
Thank you for sharing sharing Ruby. It sounds like you are under a lot of stress right now. The PT may be worried about your balance, so he would like to get you a walker that provides more support as you walk. I can help inform you more about the medications and walker to decrease your stress.
I was prescribed two new medications for my osteoarthritis in my knees on top of the other five that I am already taking. These make me very tired. My PT told me that they are looking into getting me a rolling walker to replace my cane since he said that I’m now a “fall risk”. Whatever that means. It took every ounce of me to not hit him with my cane.
It sounds like you all are discussing a theme here about not feeling in control of your chronic condition. This feeling of not being in control makes you feel upset and frustrated. Your actions are just a reaction to how people are treating you.
I'm glad I can understand what you were saying. Please lower your cane Ruby. We don't want anyone to get hurt.
You said it sister!
Of course I'm not in control. I am viewed as being an elder. I'm more than just an elder you know.
