After winning the Battle of Fredericksburg and the Battle of Chancellorsville, Confederate General Robert E. Lee was continuing his invasion of the North. He wanted to defeat the Union Army in hopes of winning the war.
The Union was camped out at Gettysburg. The Confederate forces attacked the Union Army in attempts to defeat and capture Gettysburg. The Union won by defending the town.
Most of the fighting took place in open farm fields, Cemetery Hill, Cemetery Ridge , a hill known as Little Round Top, Culp’s Hill, and Devil’s Den.
After the Confederates lost, they retreated giving the Union the chance to take multiple places that would help them eventually win the war. This battle was the turning point of the war.
