This is one of the road of trials of the hero's journey. after defeating Grendel, Beowulf must face Grendel's mother next. which turns out to be a much harder fight.
(1563-1568) "So the shielding s hero, hard pressed and enraged, took a firm grip of the hilt and swung the blade in an arc, a resolute blow that tore into her neck bone and severed it entirely, toppling the doom house of her flesh; she fell to the floor"
This is the ultimate boon. Beowulf completes his task by slaying Grendel's mother and is later rewarded with gold, weapons, armor and horses for his task.
(1655-1659) "I barely survived the battle underwater. It was hard fought, a desperate affair that could have gone badly; If god had not helped me, the outcome would've been quick and fatal. Although Hrunting is hard edged, I could never bring it to bear in battle."
This is the Return of the hero. Although Beowulf doesn't return to Geatland just yet, he returns to Hrothgar and talks about the battle with Grendel's mother and how the gods helped him to victory.
