Storyboard Text

  • Hello! Today we will be talking about the Cherokee creation myth
  • They say that the Earth was a great island floating in a body of water, and by the four cardinal points were strings in which the world was hanging from
  • It was said that after the world has grown old and the people have died the strings will break and the earth will sink back into the water and it will be all ocean again
  • While everything was water, the animals were above in Galunlati, and it was crowded. They wanted more room
  • They wanted to know what was under the water, so the water-beetle offered to go down and learn about the water
  • The water-beetle went to find a place to rest, but found none. So he dove into the water and found some soft mud to bring to the surface, it spread and spread and that is how the Earth was created
  • It was then attached to the sky by four chords, but no one remembers who did this
  • In the beginning the Earth was soft and wet, and the animals could not wait to go down to the Earth
  • They sent Buzzards down to see if the land was dry, but the bird got tired and came back to Galunlati, and he sent the Great Buzzard, who found the Cherokee village when he needed rest
  • The buzzard landed on a mountain and the animals were worried that the land was all mountains. We do not know who made the first plants and animals, but the animals had gone down to the mountains where they made their new home
