The First Job
In the chapter "Chanclas" in the book House On Mango Street the author uses a metaphor. In the book it says, "My feet swell big and heavy like plungers," (chapter 19 Cisneros). This metaphor compares Esperanza's feet to plungers, which are big and clunky. Esperanza's feet are compared to plungers, also because she is wearing big saddle shoes.
In this chapter of the book the author uses another metaphor. In the book it says, "One day you wake up and they are there. Ready and waiting like a new Buick," (chapter 20 Cisneros). The author is comparing getting larger hips to getting a new Buick. Esperanza and her friend believe that once you get hips you have become a woman.
In the vignette "The First Job" Esperanza gets her first job matching negative prints. She meets and oriental man who she gets along with at first. The man tells Esperanza that it's his birthday and that she should give him a birthday kiss. In the book it says,"I thought I would because he was so old and just as I was about to put my lips on his cheek, he grabs my face with both hands and kisses me hard on the mouth and doesn't let go." She gives him a kiss on the cheek out of sympathy. He then, sexually assaults her and forces her to kiss him.
