  • Students drop out for many reasons...but most cite the number one reason is not having a personal relations with a caring adult (4:45).

  • "What happened to the art institute? Well I'm gonna do that a little bit later on. I'm just gonna try to help out my grandma right now," (3:05).
  • Summer Jordan missed her sophomore year of high school to care for her grandparents (1:05)

  • Now age 19, Summer is helping support her family at home. She declined a scholarship to attend art school, but still hopes to go (9:24).
  • "I just put people in front of me, that's the kind of person I am. Not many people actually help people. I just can't live like that," (4:20).
  • How: The quote encourages the audience to put themselves in this situation and appeals to their moral reasoning. The text provides a logical statistic on why people drop out of school. Why: Since Summer has to make a difficult life decision based on something out of control, such as health. The students in the statistic are a part of a dilemma that they can't control and they made the decision to drop out, it could not have been a easy choice for them, but they had to make it anyways
  • How: Summer provides a first hand, credible experience of difficult decisions Why: She wishes to help others but still needs an education and is forced to chose between the two. These circumstances cannot be controlled by her. She has no say in whether her grandparents will be healthy or not, and yet she is still compelled to determine everyones fate
  • How: The designated text compels the audience to feel pity for Summer because she has shown great character and she couldn't pursue her dream. Why: Summer had chosen to help her grandparents and many others instead of helping herself and her future dreams. It was an immeasurably hard judgement to put others before herself.
