Russian Aleuts come to the island to hunt. Her dad and the man come to an agreement that allows the Aleuts to hunt and keep the tribe safe.
Later, the Aleuts go back on the established deal. A bloody battle happens and Karana's dad, the chief, dies.
The villagers leave the island. Ramo gets left behind, so Karana jumps out of the boat to be with him. Now, they have to work together to survive on their own.
Ramo wonders off and Karana comes looking for him but sadly, finds out she is too late. The wild dogs killed Ramo! Karana tames one of the dogs which she named Rontu, who becomes her new companion.
The Aleuts return to her island and she meets a Aleutan girl named Tutok. They become fast friends but one day she did not meet at the time they agreed to play. When she arrived, in the distance, Tutok's ship was sailing away, leaving Karana still stranded on the island.
After many years, her dog Rontu died and Karana is finally rescued from her island. She discovers that the rest of her village did not survive the journey on the ocean after a bad storm capsized their ship.
