Storyboard Text

  • I had heard many stories of people crossing from Mexico into America. Yet, I had never heard my godmother's story on how she made it across, so I decided to ask her.
  • YES HONEY?
  • CAN YOU TELL ME HOW YOU CROSSED THE BORDER INTO AMERICA? MY MOM SAID THAT YOU HAD THE HARDEST TIME.
  • NINA?*
  • MOM SAYS SHE GOT OVER RELATIVELY EASY- OR AS EASY AS ILLEGALLY CROSSING INTO A COUNTRY GETS. BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU?
  • YES THAT IS TRUE. YOUR MOM TOOK THE NAME OF AN AMERICAN GIRL AND CROSSED EASILY WITH THE FAMILY.
  • *NINA- Godmother in Spanish
  • YES I KNEW THAT.
  • BUT WHAT ABOUT YOU NINA?
  • OKAY, OKAY. PATIENCE CHILD.
  •
  • "YOUR MOM CAME BY CAR, WHICH IS A RISKY MOVE, BUT THE FAMILY TOLD HER SHE HAD TO SAY SHE WAS THEIR DAUGHTER'S NAME, AGE, BIRTHDAY AND MORE IF THEY ASKED. SHE WAS PRETENDING THAT SHE WAS ASLEEP, THOUGH, AND SHE MADE IT ACROSS. SOON AFTER, THEY TOOK HER TO SAN DIEGO."
  • WAIT UN COYOTE? LIKE THE ANIMAL?
  •
  • "I WAS ABOUT 8. YOUR GRANDPA HAD COME TO THE U.S. ALREADY DOING BUSINESS. EVENTUALLY, HE ASKED FOR HELP CROSSING HIS FAMILY. ONE OF OUR BROTHERS WAS ALREADY OVER THERE TOO."
  • IT WAS ONLY ME, MY MOTHER, AND MY BABY BROTHER, YOUR TIO PANCHO. HE WAS ONLY 9 MONTHS. WE WALKED WITH A COYOTE WHO WAS GOING TO HELP US ACROSS."
  •
  • NO HONEY. A COYOTE IS A PERSON WHO SMUGGLES IMMIGRANTS INTO THE UNITED STATES FOR A FEE.
  • OHHH...
