James Long was born in Culpeper County, Virginia, around 1793. He was then taken to Kentucky, then to Tennessee, and joined the army.

Long invaded Texas, for the first time, and captured Nacogdoches in 1819. Second invade in 1821 at La Bahia.

James Long was the leader of the Long expedition, and he also served as a surgeon in the War of 1812. After the battle of New Orleans, he went to Natchez to practice medicine and later bought a plantation, making him a wealthy person, and in 1817, Long joined the merchandise business with W.W. Walker.

He went to La Bahia in 1821, for his second attempt to make Texas an independent state, and was forced to surrender. He was imprisoned for a period of time in San Antonio and Monterrey. He then went to Mexico City and was shot and killed by a guard in 1822.
