It is Maddy's 11th birthday and Maddy is ecstatic. If only she could get a cell phone then her birthday would be perfect. Living in Christchurch may have some flaws but if Maddy had her wish then live would be perfect. But when she doesn't get her wish, the world seems to end.
My name is Maddy
The huge rumble fills the air. Maddy hears screaming from her brothers room and her mind yells at her earthquake, earthquake but her body is frozen, unable to move. Her parents yell at her to get in the doorway. She obeys them but only after another horrifying shake from beneath the earth. Maddy bursts into tears not knowing what to do. At least her family was safe for now.
Maddy's uncle, aunt and granny are staying with them for a couple of months as their houses are damaged so much they are now not livable because of liquidfication and are unable to live in them. so, while school is out Maddy and her siblings, Tessa and Jackson have to entertain them selves in an overcrowded, damaged house with the few games that haven't been destroyed by earthquakes.
The deep familiar rumble comes up from inside the earth once more fills Maddy's ears. Maddy not having to be told once, leaps under the kitchen table, her only support and protection. once the roaring stops the shaking comes, tossing you from one side of the house to the other with each shake.
Maddy, as soon as she saw her best friend Laura walking toward her in the distance Maddy broke into a run. As she got closer she could see the tears welling up in Laura's eyes. After Laura had blurted out the truth Maddy joined her friend in crying. Her best friend was moving away to Timaru as Laura's home was too damaged and unlivable.
I'm moving away
Hey Laura, Guess what. I got a new cellphone so that mum and dad can contact me if there was to be another huge earthquake or vice versa so give me your phone number so that I can text you. Yesterday there was a big 5.1 magnitude earthquake which happened while we were shopping at Kmart. It was freaky as we were just about to go to the counter and pay when there came a huge rumble from deep inside the earth. It was horrible. You could hear people screaming and all the clothes racks falling to the ground. We were stuck at the mall for 3 whole hours in the afternoon without food or water. at least at home we have power and water. I can't wait until the holidays when I can come down to Timaru to see you. Bye, MADDY
