  • This scene represents tradition, because every year the townspeople gather and draw out of a black box to see who would win the lottery. They have been doing this for many years, so its called a tradition.
  • This scene foreshadows Bill hesitating as if he knows that something is going to happen because at the end of the story Tessie ends up winning the lottery.
  • Shirley Jackson creates the mood of sad, ominous, and dark of this point in the story by writing the dialogue as Tessie is very upset and believes that it isn't fair, and that this tradition shouldn't continue.
