  • THE CHESAPEAKE-LEONARD INCIDENT
  • by: Kithmy Wick
  • The American ship "Chesapeake" was conducting training maneuvers just off the coast of  Virginia, when, all of a sudden...
  • They were fired  upon by the British ship  "Leopard". There were several casualties, and  a few men were impressed into the British navy.
  • Help! The British are coming!
  • American citizens, upon hearing of the incident, were outraged. They demanded war on Britain for breaching the rights of neutral countries.
  • This is an outrage! Britain must pay for their crimes against humanity!
  • Let's have  war!
  • Instead  of  declaring war on Britain, Jefferson imposed the Embargo Act,  which prohibited all trade with foreign nations.
  • Mr. President! Mr. President!  We demand war for what happened to our fellow Americans!
  • Nah.... how about....
  • it's just good business (or so Jefferson thought)
  • the Embargo Act
