Debbie and her best friend, Maureen Berck, have grown up together in the same small town. But one summer that all changes when Maureen makes a new best friend. Her name is Glenna.
All three of the friends are at the amusement park and Debbie is being excluded when Glenna is hanging out with her. They are all taking turns, but Debbie does not like Glenna. She is coming between her and Maureen.
Debbie, Maureen, and Glenna are in the car riding home. Glenna asked when they would be going on vacation or leaving for vacation.
Glenna's mom says that they are taking Maureen on their vacation and not taking Debbie. She thought that Maureen was spending the night at their house to say goodbye.
Debbie gets out of the car and so does Maureen. Maureen notices that Debbie is upset and takes her to a river to talk it over. She is mad because she doesn't want her friendship to end.
Debbie and Maureen talked about Glenna. Debbie had made a point that Glenna would not care if she just disappeared. Maureen knew this was true, but couldn't decide what to do so she just hung out with Debbie for the rest of the afternoon.
