Storyboard Text

  • The journey of oxygen is a complicated system which works simultaneously to keep us alive.
  • Bronchioles
  • Nose & mouth
  • Lungs
  • First, let's get familiar with the main names we need in our journey.
  • Trachea
  • Bronchi
  • The first step of the oxygen journey is when the brain stem sends a message to the diaphragm telling it to contract downwards for inspiration.
  •
  • As the diaphragm contracts, it allows for more room in the lungs for more air inhalation.
  • Now that the lung has enlarged and is ready for more air, we breathe in through our nose and mouth where the oxygen enters.
  • The cells continue along from the bronchi onto the bronchioles and end up at a tiny air sac called the alveoli.
  • All the little oxygen cells then move into the trachea and split evenly into each bronchi.
  • Inside these alveoli's, the oxygen diffuses into the capillaries and bloodstream while carbon dioxide diffuses into the alveoli.
  •
  • The carbon dioxide undergoes the opposite of the oxygen journey and is exhaled through the mouth and nose.
  • This journey is repeated over and over again and keeps us going every second of the day.
