  • The Pre-natal Period
  • Early Brain Development
  • The Attachment Bond
  • Implications:  * 1/8 of children born are delivered premature.         * 25% of premature babies born have health problems and an                       increased risk for health problems. * 40,000 premature babies born each year.         *Babies very fragile, most likely to have respiratory problems.
  • First 3 months are critical (cells are rapidly dividing)         > specialized cells for different functions         > said cells move to permanent locations
  • *Need experiences to build the brain (becomes the                          foundation-first 3 years); Brain will grow (plasticity) * Lower Brain- brain stem and mid-brain (heart rate,                         breathing, vision, auditory, sleep, appetite) READY AT BIRTH *Limbic System- nurturing experiences, regulate emotions,            (impulses, fight or flight, anger, adrenaline) NOT READY
  • Cortex (thinking brain, sensory, stimulating)         > as it develops it will start to control some of the lower                 brain impulses takes years and years to build
  • * allows child to trust, love, and form relationships * babies that don't form bonds will not be able to when they age * bond is the beginning of the child' consciousness * fundamental for development of a healthy child * lack of attachment is correlated to crime/violence
  • Critical early months/years (neurological development)         > production of oxytocin: chemical linking to bonding/trust         > formed by touch, talking, actions, sounds
  • Affects Fetal Development: Teratogens- malformed the fetus, damage cells that alter D.N.A., damage                       cells when they divide. Nutrition- leads to lifelong problems in a cellular level, leads                                       to irreversible damage. Stress- chronic stress + cortisol impacts cognitive functioning, child at                risk for for depression and other problems.
  • Affects: Neurons-born with 100-200 billion (triggered by the 5 senses)         An electrical and chemical bond forms a connection (the         more triggered the bond the stronger) Axons/ Dendrites- transmission lines for signals and bonds Functions: logic, reason, planning, impulse control, self- control
  • Parental Influence: *Neglective, Abusive, Scary, Hostile, Withdrawn, Passive Children Behavior: *irrational, all alone, no emotions, afraid, give up, off in their own world, avoid real relationships, ADD, aggressive, extreme emotions, explosive, fearful, angry/depressive, untrusting
