Aquene was fishing for his tribe which was his daily chore, until he came upon an injured dog. He felt sympathy for the dog, so he carried him to his canoe and took him back home so the dog could heal.
Aquene nurtured the dog for days and even bonded with him. They became best friends and did everything with each other.
Aquene started to ignore his task of fishing which made his tribe enraged. They began to wonder if Aquene having a dog was a good idea. They tribe stopped letting Aquene feed his dog with the tribe's food and it started to starve since Aquene got too distracted trying to feed his dog and played with him.
One night Aquene could hear the dog whimpering and howling in his sleep. He went and checked on the dog, but what he saw broke his heart. He saw tears dampen the fur around his eyes. Aquene then realized that he needed to take him back home and to start fishing again.
The next morning Aquene took the dog down the same river where they met and released him. The dog, showing love and gratitude, licked his face and went home.
Aquene began to fish again, for he understood that his responsibility was for his tribe.
