The only other people he knew of that had lighter eyes was a baby named Gabriel, whom his father was taking care of and a female Five. On the Ceremony of Twelve he was chosen to be The Receiver.
The Receiver was one of the most important jobs in the Community. Their job was to receive all the memories of the world from The Giver in order to become the next Giver. While studying with the Giver he gets memories of pain, joy, and even colors which he never knew of. After getting the memory of love he shares it with Gabriel after feeling a strong connection towards him. rwhelmed with the fact he knows thing the rest of the Community would never know, that he runs away.
This story starts at the Ceremony of Twelve when Jonas is given his assignment as the Receiver. This was one of the most importat jobs in the Community and he would go on to advise the council.
When Jonas' apprenticeship with the Giver commences Jonas wants to feel all of the pain.He feels as if he can handle it all, so the Giver gives it to him. Jonas lies on the bed in shock of what he has just seen as he lies there on the bed.
After receiving the memory of love Jonas goes home to his parents asking them if they loved him. They completely disregard his question replying with love is to obsolete of a word and tell him that they are 'fond' of him. Very 'fond' of him in fact. Jonas says his first lie when he tells his parents he understands. He wakes up in the morning over-washed in a new sense of awareness and whispers to hims self and Gabriel, "There could be love."
